Mahagauri is the beautiful manifestation of Goddess Durga in her eighth form. The Day 8 of Navratri festival is devoted to Maa Mahagauri, the eighth manifestation of Goddess Durga(Ashtami). Being a symbol of purity, serenity and tranquility, Mahagauri is said to put an end to all the suffering of her devotees. It is also believed that Mahagauri is the 16 year old unmarried form of Goddess Parvati.

The name Mahagauri means extremely white. She is described to be pristine white in colour and very beautiful. Due to her fair complexion Goddess Mahagauri is compared with the conch, the moon and the white flower of Kunda. She is depicted wearing white coloured clothes only because of that Devi Mahagauri is also known as Shwetambardhara.

Mahagauri is the eighth manifestation of goddess Durgaamongst the Navadurgas. Mahagauri is worshipped on the eighth day of Navratri. According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Mahagauri has the power to fulfill all the desires of her devotees. The one who worships the goddess gets relief from all the sufferings in life. When the Goddess was visited by Shiva after severe penance that left her with black skin and in harsh conditions, he carried her to the river Ganga and cleaned her with its waters, revealing her glowing complexion, thus he named her Mahagauri.
